The National Consultative Council on Social Responsibility was established in July 2008, and is considered an organization of national public interest.

The council has 60 members hailing from the business sector, public sector, civil society, and international development agencies.

Its mission is, “To be an effective, multi-sectoral platform that promotes the culture and practice of social responsibility, and the construction of a national environment that propitiates those actions,” according to the council’s website, which bases its work on ISO 26000 norms which spell out socially responsible business practices.

Although the notion of social responsibility originated with the private sector, the concept has broadened to be viewed “as a tool for multi-sector cooperation and co-responsibility … for the development of collective solutions to the global, national, regional and local economic, social, environmental and governance problems facing our country,” said Elizabeth Caravaca, the council president.

The council works to highlight work done by different institutions and companies in the area of social responsibility.

At their website, www.socialresponsibility.cr, is information on success stories of social responsibility in action and best practices from companies that are involved in the practice.

Caravaca in an interview with Extra TV 42, emphasized the move away from philanthropic activities that have historically characterized companies who wished to give back to the community. She emphasized how social responsibility aims at creating impacts that forge sustainability over the long term, and have a lasting positive effect on the environment and society.
