With the purpose of increasing the tourism and improving the conditions for national and foreign tourists that visit Corcovado National Park, and in order to provide park rangers with an adequate space to do their work, the Costa Rica Government inaugurated today the new infrastructure at Corcovado in which $2.4 million dollars of the Sustainable Tourism program were invested.

The works were handed over to the community and the park rangers by President Luis Guillermo Solís, the First Lady Mercedes Peñas, and the Minister of Environment and Energy, Edgar Gutiérrez.

The President highlighted the quality and functionality of the work developed in the Corcovado National Park and indicated that his administration has invested over 5 thousand million colones to improve the conditions of the park rangers, money that has originated from donations of the Governments of Japan and the United States, and from the help of the Non-Governmental Organizations and investment of the Costa Rica Government.

The work done includes the construction of a visitor center in La Leona sector, new bathrooms, showers and a wastewater plant, as well as resting and picnic areas and the installation of an electric generator.

In the Sirena sector, a platform was built for campers to enjoy, also a kitchen and dining areas, bathrooms and showers; the wastewater system was improved, and an electric generator was installed. Bathrooms and showers were also installed in the San Pedrillo area where the wastewater system was also given maintenance.

“All this work are efforts done by the Ministry of Environment and Energy to improve the conditions of our national parks, with the hopes of raising the number of visitors and at the same time help the close by communities bringing more tourism and more income to the communities”, expressed Edgar Gutiérrez.

The Corcovado National Park is divided in six sectors: Leona, Sirena, Patos, San Pedrillo, Los Planes and El Tigre. It is located in the province of Puntarenas between the counties of Golfito and Osa in the Osa Peninsula.
