According to Riteve, the company that carries out vehicle inspections in Costa Rica, there are about 125,000 vehicles that still haven’t passed inspection this year.

Some of these are vehicles that failed inspection and need to undertake repairs in order to pass; and others simply haven’t bothered to make an appointment, said Riteve.

“The main concern is that many of these cars could be circulating on our roads, compromising road safety for all,” said Jennifer Hidalgo, a Riteve spokeswoman.

Owners of vehicles which haven’t passed inspection won’t be able to pay the end-of-year circulation fee or ‘marchamo.’

Anyone driving without both of these 2016 stickers as of January 1, 2017 can be fined doubly.

Saturday, December 31 Riteve stations have a shorter schedule: establishments located in the Greater Metropolitan Area will open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and those in other areas from 7 a.m. to 12 noon.
