Gaza City, Palestine, Dec 24 — The Islamist movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad welcomed on Saturday the resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council against Jewish settlements and considered it a “change” in the policy of the international community.

Hamas welcomes this resolution and welcomes the positive changes in international stances supporting Palestinian rights in international organizations, Hamas spokesman, Fauzi Barhum, said in a statement.

Barhum also called on the international community to do more for the Palestinian cause and end the Israeli occupation.

In another statement, Islamic Jihad spokesman Daud Shihab described the resolution as a clear condemnation of (Israeli) occupation policies and their aggression against the Palestinian people.

“It’s a Palestinian victory,” he said, speaking of an international consensus against Israel and its policies.

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution on Friday that condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank and demanded an immediate end to Israel‘s policy of building settlements on occupied Palestinian territory.

Although Washington used its veto to block a similar resolution in 2011, President Barack Obama, who has taken a harder line on the settlements in recent months, ignored a public appeal from President-elect Donald Trump to do likewise this time. EFE
