UFC 203 takes place today at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio and features in the main card a five round heavyweight match between USA’s Stipe Miocic (15-2-0)(W-L-D) and English veteran Alistair Overeem (41-14-0, 1NC).
Miocic, an Ohio native, is making the first defense of his UFC heavyweight title which he earned in a first round KO of Fabricio Werdum back in May of this year, Miocic is fast and aggressive, a good striker with a wrestler base. Overeem has a lot of experience, and he is a better fighter today because of it, he is a well-rounded fighter, a better striker than Miocic and he is quite successful in his submissions, he is coming from a four fight winning streak and at 36 he knows this is his best chance of taking the UFC belt home. Miocic wants to prove he deserves that belt and earn respect as a titleholder. Miocic vs. Overeem promises lots of action for MMA fans.
The co-main event of UFC 203 features another heavyweight bout, in this case Brazilian Fabricio Werdum (20-6-1) takes on USA’s Travis Browne (18-4-1); this fight is a rematch of the event that took place back in April 2014 when Werdum was declared the winner by Unanimous Decision. Werdum as we mentioned before is coming from a 1st round KO loss to Stipe Miocic and is hoping that a win over Browne will get his career back in track and of course his ultimate goal would be to get a rematch with Miocic to get his belt back, he is 39 years old and his strength is the ground game. Browne is overall a good fighter, but he doesn’t really excel in any field, his performance has been inconsistent and in general Werdum is simply the better fighter, interesting rematch nonetheless.
Now let’s talk about the match that has grabbed everyone’s attention: the debut of Phil Brooks “CM Punk” in the Octagon. CM Punk is a former professional wrestler, and his name recognition allowed for this fight to be part of the UFC 203 PPV card. CM Punk will face Mickey Gall a young 2-0 prospect who holds a brown belt in jiu-jitsu. The former WWE superstar has some experience in BJJ and Kempo Karate. All the eyes of the WWE community will be tuning in tonight to watch CM Punk’s performance in the Octagon.
