Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will head to Mexico on Wednesday to meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, the Mexican president and Trump confirmed today.

“I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow,” Trump tweeted Tuesday night.

The Mexican presidency had indicated last Friday that Pena Nieto sent “invitations to both candidates” – Republican nominee Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton – to visit the neighboring country.

The Mexican presidency also tweeted via their official account that Trump “has accepted the invitation and will meet privately tomorrow with the president Enrique Pena Nieto”.

Trump’s visit to Mexico is a surprise twist in his election campaign, which kicked off with an insult to Mexican immigrants, whom he called “criminals” and “rapists” before outlining his proposal to build a wall along the border between the two countries.

The meeting with Pena Nieto falls on the same day that Trump is scheduled to deliver a long-awaited immigration speech in Arizona, which is scheduled for 6pm local time (1am GMT Thursday).

In the final stage of presidential campaign, Trump seeks to win the votes of African-American and Hispanic voters, two key constituencies with which Clinton claims a wide lead in the polls. EFE
