German police is investigating the possibility that the Sunday night explosion in the city of Ansbach in Bavaria, southern Germany, which killed the perpetrator of the attack and injured at least ten people, is an Islamic attack.

Bavarian Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, said at a press conference that the fact the attacker attempted to kill several people near an open-air music festival, points in that direction.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack was reportedly a 27-year-old Syrian. Prior to the attack, he had attempted suicide twice and had received psychiatric treatment.

According to police, the man tried to enter the music festival attended by 2,500 people in the city center, but had been turned away since he did not have an admission ticket.

Police is investigating a mobile phone that he carried with him and also the composition of the explosive device, which contained pieces of metal.

The man, who lived in Ansbach, arrived in Germany two years ago and applied for asylum, but his request was denied last year; his deportation was suspended because of the situation in Syria.

Herrmann condemned the “abuse” of the asylum system and stressed that refugees in Germany should respect the laws and regulations of the country.

The explosion in Ansbach comes after a week when Bavaria has been shaken by successive violent acts.

On Monday a 17-year-old Afghan refugee armed with an ax and knife attacked passengers on a regional train. He was shot dead by police after injuring five passengers. The investigation concluded that the act was inspired by the propaganda of Islamic State (IS).

On Friday, a young German-Iranian of 17 years old opened fire at a shopping mall in Munich and killed nine people before killing himself after he was cornered by police. However, the Munich shooting seems not to be linked to Islamists.

In the neighboring State of Baden Wurttemberg, a 21-year old Syrian killed a woman and injured two other people with a machete.

Some 200 police officers have been deployed in Ansbach, phone lines and an email address are now ready to receive information from potential witnesses, photos and videos of the surroundings. EFE

Syrian Refugee Kills Woman; Injures Two Others in Reutlingen

Berlin, Jul 24 (EFE).- A 21-year-old Syrian refugee has killed a woman with a machete on Sunday and wounded two others in the southwestern German city of Reutlingen, local police said in a statement.

Around 16:30 several people called the police and reported that a man had gotten into a fight with a woman near the bus station and had stabbed her, according to the police.

The woman succumbed to her fatal wounds, while the assailant managed to escape after wounding two other people before being arrested later on.

According to the police statement, the suspect is a 21-year-old Syrian asylum seeker with a criminal record.

Security officials believe it is a lone-wolf attack, and dismissed the likelihood of an eminent threat against the residents of Reutlingen. EFE
