Dental implants are the most frequently sought procedures by dental tourists in Costa Rica, but not every patient will be a good implantology candidate. Dental tourists who suffer from osteoporosis are generally thought to be at risk with regard to dental implants, but this will not always be the case.

Patients evaluated for dental implants by the staff of the Flikier Institute of Dental Rehabilitation, a specialty practice that caters to dental tourists in Costa Rica, can expect to have their medical history will be reviewed and considered by the clinical staff. When a history of, or vulnerability to, osteoporosis is detected, the quantity and quality of the bone will respected prior to making a decision.

Osteoporosis is a condition that presents an irregular loss of bone tissue, which causes fragile porous bones attributable to a lack of calcium and other minerals. Osteoporosis is often found in postmenopausal women, but this does not mean that they must settle for traditional dentures during a dental tourism trip to Costa Rica.

At the Flikier Institute, the implantology team will not automatically give up on implants when a patient mentions osteoporosis. To this effect, a 2016 scientific paper in the Journal of Oral Implantology published the results of a study that followed 24 postmenopausal women who had lost most of their teeth. Half of the women had osteoporosis and were prescribed biophosphonates, and the other dozen did not have the condition, but all women received dental implants.

It so happens that all women enjoyed implantation success. The amount of bone loss of both groups was comparable and did not compromise the dental implants.
