Despite reports of significant shaking Friday morning, there were still no reports of significant damage or injury late Friday afternoon as the result of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Central America, offshore of the Guatemala – Mexico border.

 

The quake struck at 8:11 A.M. local time on Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which placed the epicenter in the Pacific ocean some 105 kilometers SSW of Champerico, Guatemala, along the Mexico-Guatemala border.  That placed the epicenter about 240 kilometers south-southwest of Guatemala City.

 

The quake struck at a depth of about 48 kilometers, making it a shallow earthquake, which typically produce significant shaking, and was felt throughout the region in both Guatemala and southern Mexico, according to reports.

 

However, by late afternoon there were still no reports of any significant damage or injury, according to Mexican and Guatemalan authorities.

 

The quake offshore of the Central American country preceded a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Japan by a little more than two hours according to the USGS.
