Not many scuba divers are aware of the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica as an underwater paradise that begs to be discovered. Diving in this region of Costa Rica can be as rewarding as in the Caribbean; the trick is to getting the timing right. The right time is from now (December) until late April, and the reason is explained below.

 

Underwater visibility off the coast of Guanacaste can be a hit-and-miss affair during the green (rainy) season, and this is due to heavy agricultural runoff from the numerous farms in the province. Torrential rains in Costa Rica tend to cause sedimentation as well as an eutrophication effect (which can be good and bad). The dry season in Guanacaste is very dry, and this is perfect for scuba divers as you can see in the video below, which was filmed with GoPro equipment just a few weeks ago in the Catalina Islands, which are not far from Liberia.

 

As you can observe, visibility is adequate and biodiversity is just perfect.
