Music, theater and folklore were showcased alongside science, research and community development at the recent Guanacaste Expo of the University of Costa Rica (UCR). This major cultural and social event kicked off on November 6^th at the Guanacaste Museum in Liberia, and it was deemed a sheer success by organizers who are pleased with the ongoing development and growth that this province has been enjoying over the last few years.

More than 40 investigative and research projects conducted by UCR students from Guanacaste were showcased at the Expo. According to Neldys Ramirez Vasquez, Social Outreach Coordinator for the UCR campus in Guanacaste, the recent Expo was crucial in the sense that it truly showed to the community that their young people are focused on keeping the regional growth and development momentum going.

Ms. Ramirez further explained that:

“This was the first time that the Expo UCR in Guanacaste was held off campus. This time we decided to hold the expo in a strategic meeting point of the Liberia canton to be closer to the community and to make sure that people know that UCR is deeply interested in improving the socioeconomic conditions of people across the region.”

Altogether, 35 community improvement projects were exhibited along with seven investigative projects. In the past, investigative projects were predominant, but UCR students in Guanacaste and across Costa Rica are showing a greater affinity of community improvement projects that put more emphasis on immediate action than on research. Cultural activities included yoga and tai chi demonstrations along with the folkloric music and dance of Guanacaste, which are emblematic across Costa Rica.
