Would you expect to find 19 roosters stashed in the trunk of a car?

Well, Costa Rican police officers in the southern San José district of Desamparados were sure surprised when they decided to follow and search a suspicious-looking car.

They found roosters stashed in the car trunk along with various implements used for cock fighting including 81 spurs for the roosters.

When police were patrolling in the Higuito de San Miguel neighborhood of Desamparados, they observed with suspicion two men loading different colored bags into a car.

The police followed them and then stopped them to inspect the contents of the trunk, thus discovering the curious contents of live animals and fighting implements.

Police sent the 19 roosters to the authorities at the National Animal Health Service (SENASA, its initials in Spanish).

The officers apprehended the two men who were in the vehicle and identified as Valverde (70) and Ugalde (23).

Using, training or breeding roosters for cockfighting is against the country’s animal welfare laws, said police.
