Costa Rica is a country that holds amazing and unique characteristics, here is a short list of some of these:
1. In Costa Rica you get 12 hours of day light year round, the sun comes out between 5 -6 a.m. and it goes down at 5-6 p.m.
2. It has a rock and sand formation that has the shape of a whale’s tail, located in the Pacific Coast where hundreds of humpback whales are seen every year. (Marino Ballena National Park)
3. One of Costa Rica’s most famous attractions is the “Celeste River” which has a distinctive turquoise coloration
4. Costa Rica has an area of 51,100 square kilometres , smaller than Lake Michigan, but holds 5% of the world’s biodiversity.
5. There are between 100-200 volcanic formations in Costa Rica, 5 of them are considered active and are closely monitored: Arenal, Poás, Turrialba, Rincón de la Vieja, Irazú
6. The country produces 99% of its electricity from renewable sources
7. Costa Ricas has 52 species of hummingbirds, close to 1800 species of spiders and 137 species of snakes, 22 of them venomous .
8. Costa Rica banned hunting for sport in 2012.
9. You can actually see devil rays jumping and “flying” out of the water at Santa Elena Bay in Guanacaste
10. It holds every year one of the hardest athletic events in the planet, MTB multi-stage competition La Ruta de los Conquistadores which takes athletes from the Pacific to the Atlantic Coast
11. Here, the majority of the streets have no name, although there are avenues and street numbers hardly anyone uses them, and addresses are given in a particular way.
12. Costa Ricans are known as “Ticos” and “Ticas”, they refer to the country as “Tiquicia” and to Americans as “Gringos/Gringas”.
13. The country has no army, it was abolished in 1948.
14. Costa Rica has 12 micro climates, but the average temperature is of around 70-80⁰F year round
15. Costa Rica has 1,228 kilometers of coast. 1,016 in the Pacific coast and 212 in the Atlantic coast.
