Police in Costa Rica have been busy both on land and at sea intercepting drugs.

Since January the police force has racked up over 14.5 tons in drug seizures, some of which was destined for local consumption, and much of which was in transit from South America to points beyond Costa Rica.

The country’s drug control police (PCD, in Spanish) reports that so far this year, 89 narco criminal structures have been dismantled as the result of investigation by PCD officers.

Of the total drug captures so far in 2017, a little over 11 tons were cocaine, and over 3.5 tons were marijuana, with the remainder divided between crack, K2, heroin, MDMA (ecstasy), and LSD.

In addition, police were able to eradicate an estimated 1,438,469 marijuana plants.

Twenty of the 89 criminal structures involved with illegal drugs were international, and 69 were locally run, with 28 of the local groups being run within families.

In addition to this, police report they have seized ¢94,684,065 colones, $3,479,474 dollars, 335,00 Euros, as well as 36 firearms and 49 vehicles that were in the possession of the alleged narco mafiosos.
