Eleven year old Daniel León suffers from Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA), a rare disorder of the bone marrow in which it fails to produce enough red blood cells and usually apparent during the first year of life. Daniel was diagnosed with this condition when he was 1 year and nine months old. Only four other children have this disease in Costa Rica right now, and only 35 per year occur in the United States and Canada.

Symptoms of this disorder include fatigue, weakness and abnormal pale appearance, treatment for Diamond-Blackfan anemia includes immunosuppressive drugs combined with corticosteroids and cyclosporine and blood transfusions, but these just keep the condition under control and depending on the case the body can continue to deteriorate; a bone marrow transplant is the best option for patients to go back to living a normal life.

Daniel has received more than 150 blood transfusions, and although he has been receiving attention at the Costa Rica National Children’s Hospital throughout the years, now there is nothing else this hospital can do for him. In 2016 his condition worsen, doctors told the family there was a big chance his organs could start failing due to the overcharge of iron caused by the high number of blood transfusions he received, his quality of life has considerably deteriorated.

The family was able to raise $31 thousand dollars with the help of family and friends to take him to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to be evaluated in December of 2016, and recently this hospital informed Daniel’s family that he is a good candidate for a bone morrow transplant, unfortunately the cost of this complex medical procedure is of $914 thousand dollars which has to be paid in advance.
